"What Wilt Thou Have Me To Do?"
Currently in my religion class we are reading in Acts. We were specifically talking about Chapter 9 today and Saul's conversion. One of the biggest things that impacted me was how in Acts 9:6 Saul asks Heavenly Father, "...what wilt thou have me to do?"
While the things that we may be doing are not necessarily bad, the may not be the best things for us. They may not be leading us down the path that we need to be going down.
It is my belief that it is part of our journey on this earth to become the best versions of ourselves that we can be. And we become that way through our Heavenly Father's guidance because He can see the big picture. While we may not like the answers and promptings that we sometimes receive, in the end He sees and knows what is in store for us. He knows what we need to become. He knows what He wants us to become.
There is a Mormon Message that I think really helps to understand this. It is one of my all time favorites. It is called "The Will of God".
I know that through the help of our Heavenly Father, we can and will become the best versions of ourselves, and the person that our Heavenly Father NEEDS us to be.
So I am extending the same challenge to you guys. Will you ask God? Will you take the challenge to become a better version of yourself?
We started talking about this in regards to our own lives and whether we would go to the Lord and ask that same question. It's an interesting idea. Knowing that the Lord may ask me to do or change something that may make me uncomfortable, would I be willing to go to the Lord and ask Him what I need to do/change about myself? An even more important question is would I be willing to do it?
It's so interesting to think about. I feel like if you had asked me this question when I was still in high school, I would probably have an internal panic attack. Right now though, I feel like I have learned and grown so much that change is becoming a very normal part of my life. It doesn't scare me nearly as much. But as humans, how would we react to the answer that we receive?
Scared?
Stubborn?
Embarrassed?
Happy?
Willing?
I think it is human instinct to not want to change, whether because of fear, or embarrassment, because no body wants to be told that they are doing things wrong. We don't want our flaws pointed out. We would like to be told that we are doing everything right, but in the end we are not perfect. We are not doing everything right. That's just the way it is.
In October of 1999, President Henry B. Eyring gave his talk "Do Not Delay". In it he says
"One of the questions we must ask of our Heavenly Father in private prayer is this: 'What have I done today, or not done, which displeases Thee? If I can only know, I will repent with all my heart without delay.' That humble prayer will be answered. And the answers will surely include the assurance that asking today was better than waiting to ask tomorrow."My religion teacher then extended that challenge to each of us. Would we be willing to pray as ask Heavenly Father "What have I done today, or not done, which displeases Thee? If I can only know, I will repent with all my heart without delay."
