Hi My Name is Sam And I'm Addicted to My iPhone
It's no secret that society in general is becoming increasingly more attached to technology and social media. And I am definitely guilty of it myself. It wasn't that bad when I didn't have a smart phone, but half way through my Junior year of high school, when I opened that box on Christmas morning to reveal a shiny black iPhone 4, my whole world seemed to change. I suddenly had so much information and so many possibilities right at my finger tips.
My addiction started out slowly. I already had a Facebook, but I suddenly had an Instagram. These were followed closely by a Twitter and even a Tumblr (which I have since gotten rid of). When a Pinterest app was released I though life couldn't get much better! Then came Snapchat and so many other apps to keep in touch with people all of the time.
Like I said it started slowly, and then all of a sudden it sky rocketed, and quickly. I found myself having to charge my phone several times a day as well as a night to make sure it didn't die on me at an inconvenient time (which sometimes happens anyways). My data was getting used up faster then ever before (I do share data with four other family members but there were definitely months were I used the most) and I was running out of storage space on my phone all of the time.
Recently, as in the past couple of weeks, I realized that I was spending WAY to much time on my phone looking at pointless things. The first thing I would do when I woke up was look at any text messages I had gotten while I was sleeping, then I would head straight for social media. Now maybe I suffer from so serious FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out), but it was a constant cycle. Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, Pinterest. Then after I had made it through the complete rotation, I went through it at least one more time before I finally climbed out of bed. Then I would be constantly going through the rotation basically when ever I had a spare moment in my day. And at night, it was even worse. I would literally hours lying awake on my phone waiting to see if anything changed on social media, which most of the time it hadn't from the first time I had checked it.
Now that definitely sounds like I have an addiction to me!
I finally decided to do something about it. I deleted my Facebook and Pinterest apps. Just like that. Cut the cord. I knew I had to start out with the apps that I spent a majority of my time on, so those were the first to go. It was definitely weird not having them on my phone at first, but I saw the benefits almost immediately. I not only looked at my phone less, but I also had a whole heck of a lot more storage space available!
I have since put Pinterest back on my phone, which has once again increased the amount of time I spend on my phone, but I am slowly weaning myself off of it (taking away the Facebook and Pinterest at once might have been a little too much for me to handle right off the bat).
I honestly can say that I kind of enjoy not having Facebook on my phone anymore! While it is disappointing sometimes when I go to get on to look something up or find someone and I remember that it's not there anymore, I thoroughly enjoy getting on my computer to check Facebook more then I did on my phone. I told my mom, it is more exciting and in a way more meaningful to me now because there is something to look forward to when I get on! There a lot more things to see and I find it WAY more exciting to see a red notification mark when I get on now.
So yes, I am still addicted to my iPhone, but I am working on becoming less dependent on it. Wish me luck!
